Steps On The Proper Selection Of A Right Phono Cartridge

By Jerry Young

Magnetic cartridges are types of transducers which are being used for the playback of records or the analog sound recordings on the record players. Another term for cartridge is pickup, a device which is electro mechanical and has the purpose of converting vibrational energy to electrical energy. This contains a stylus which is either mounted permanently or removable. The stylus tip makes contact physically to the record groove. The electrical signal will then be amplified and converted to sound by the loudspeaker.

Back in history, vinyl recordings are considered as the most popular device used by people when they listen to music. But today, these have been made with many different designs and styles. However, the vinyl is still popularly used by many people today but the audiophile and the DJ communities are improved in a hi fidelity. The cartridge top be chosen is very important factor. Here are the following tips in selecting for phono cartridge.

Determining the budget. The component can be more likely associated with large stereo systems. During the allocation of budget, make sure to consider the whole system and its total costs. In order to have the right budget, start your allocation with only 10 percent on the components total expenditures.

Choosing the right mount for the tonearm. This tonearm of the turntable is being classified into 4 categories. When purchasing a cartridge, make sure that it is compatible to the mount type. A standard mount is a very common type. It contains head shell, a large and a flat part located under a cartridge, and is being secured by 2 screws.

The P types are commonly used only for low end turntables. Rear end parts of cartridges are plugged to tonearms. Convertible types may not be common but these can fit to both P and standard mounts. Integrated mounts are making use of propriety cartridges and these cannot be easily swapped with the other models. DJ turntables are commonly using these.

Choosing between two types, either moving magnet or moving coil cartridge. Almost all modern types of phono cartridges are usually magnetic. These are consist of magnets and small metal coils that will relate with each other in order for the electrical signal to be produced. Moving magnet cartridges are the most common designs. Models are available in low end and high end.

Moving coil cartridges are the location where in the magnet will be fixed then the coil will move. These are more preferred by most of the audio enthusiasts in order to have a superior sound. Typically, these are available only in high end and expensive models. If these are used, the MC of the amplifier should be separate.

Compare the stylus shapes from different types of cartridges. Styluses are similar to that of the features of needles and these have the purpose of touching vinyl records directly. Usually, modern productions are making use of diamonds as the material with various sizes and shapes.

There are also cheaper types having spherical shapes but may produce sounds which are in low quality. Elliptical styluses have better area for contact, thus, lesser force is needed for tracking. Micro line, biradial, and a linear contact are types of styluses in which the manufacturing is difficult. These also have expensive costs.
