Techniques Of Keratoconus Treatment NY

By Dennis Wright

Keratoconus is a condition experienced when the cornea thins and slowly bulges outward into a cone shape. The shape will lead to blurred vision and might lead to insensitivity to glare and light. The condition usually affects both eyes and starts to affect people between 10 to 25 years. It can progress slowly for 10 years or more. In considering Keratoconus treatment NY residents need to know options that are available.

Treatment options will depend on the severity of the condition and the speed with which it is progressing. If the condition is mild to moderate, one can simply use contact lenses, For many people, the cornea will become stable after a number of years. For those with moderate versions, they are unlikely to need any further treatment. For others, there might be scarring of the cornea which make it hard wearing contact lenses. The way out might be surgery.

There are different types of lenses that you can use. Soft lenses can correct distorted vision when it is still in early stages. You would however have to change prescription of these glasses as shape of the cornea keeps changing. The next option would be to use hard contact lenses. When these are used, one may feel uncomfortable in the early stages but adjust to their use later on. They offer good vision and are custom made to perfectly fit the corneas.

Hybrid lenses have rigid centers with a soft ring around their outside for improved comfort. For people who cannot tolerate hard contacts, this is the best option. When it comes to scleral lenses, they are essential for irregular shapes within the cornea when the condition has advanced. Rather than rest on the corneas like conventional lenses, they sit on white portion of eyes that is known as sclera. They vault above the corneas without necessarily touching it.

In the case of corneal scarring of corneas, surgery is the option. The same is the case in cases when vision is adversely depreciated and you are unable to wear lenses. There are various forms of surgery available and the one used depends on where the bulge is and severity of the condition.

Corneal insert is a type of surgery that one can go for. In this procedure, there is placement of clear, small and crescent shaped plastic insert within the cornea to flatten the cone. It supports the shape of the cornea, which leads to improvement of vision. The inserts are also used for restoration of shape of the cornea as well as slowing progress of keratoconus.

One can also go for corneal transplant. It is useful when an individual has corneal scarring. The procedure involves transplanting either just sections of the cornea or entire organ. It is a procedure that will take up to one year to have vision rectified. For full recovery, one might have to wait several years.

Corneal transplant is a very successful procedure. There however are possible complications. These include poor vision, graft rejection and astigmatism. For some people, there will be inability to use contact lenses.
