Benefits Of Using Structural Insulated Panels In Construction

By Charles Baker

Structural panels with insulation have become popular building materials over a long time. They are highly preferred due to their flexibility in their usage. One can use them to construct the ceiling, wall, and floor of a building like any other material. Their structured composite is usually polystyrene foam, extruded polystyrene and composite honeycomb sandwiched between cement, magnesium oxide board or metal. Here are benefits of using structural insulated panels in construction.

Lightweight and strong. These materials are lightweight if matched with other types of construction materials. The fact that they are light does not make them secure. They can even make a house withstand harsh environmental conditions especially if they are well designed.

Resistant to mold growth and infestation from insects. Quality-standard panels should not rot or deteriorate under any condition. Therefore, there are fewer risks of health hazards associated with mold infestations. Most of these products have a waterproof covering making them suitable for use. Besides that, most materials used to make the products do not have essential nutrients to feed insects. For that reason, they are safe from insect infestation.

Benefits to the occupiers. Occupiers have a couple of advantages while using this kind of construction material. First, it maintains the building airtight preserving heat during cold seasons. Also, it reduces the time spent to construct offices compared with traditional framing methods. For that reason, they reduce energy bills and constructions to about fifty percent when one decides to use this product.

Easy to design and build. Architectures have the flexibility to make any design using this building material. They can even use computer-aided devices to get the most accurate design for a particular structure. They are also easy to build due to their light weight and their pre-design. Therefore, they cut the duration used in construction by a half and does not require any specialized tools.

These materials are environmentally friendly. Timber and concrete have a high environmental impact compared with SIPs. This product is factory-made and designed to fit a particular house design. Therefore, there are minimal chances of waste if matched with lumber and concrete. Besides that, their ability to conserve heat reduces the rate of global warming which is highly influenced by other materials.

Offer resistance to the hurricane and seismic movement. SIPs are ideal products to use in areas that are prone to hurricanes and seismic activities. Their high level of stability guarantees the safety of a house that has used them in withstanding such natural events. Even so, the capacity to design them to fit a particular architectural design provides an opportunity to design and construct a house to withstand such activities.

Besides the fact that these products are ideal, there are a few setbacks that result from their usage. Most of these setbacks are as a result of poor maintenance practices. For instance, products that have a poor waterproof material can easily rot putting the house occupants at risk of infections related to mold growth. In that case, one should consider those made out of a waterproof material and has boric acid applied on them to eliminate the infestation.
