Useful Information About Gopher Trap

By Stephanie Ward

Among the animals that exclusively dwell in tunnels underground are moles. They dig these tunnels in the ground with sharp teeth and claws they possess. Seeing a mole is very difficult. However, one can observe the effect above the ground. Moles can cause great destruction to trees, landscape, grass, and scenery. Therefore, eradicating them immediately they are realized is an excellent idea. Here is some information about gopher trap.

There are many ways that can be used to remove moles. However, most of the methods available are highly ineffective because these animals rarely come out of their tunnels. The only viable method to use against them is to trap. Once they are caught in the traps, they can be euthanized or relocated to a different place where their activities are not a nuisance to people.

In the market, most traps are manufactured to be fatal in order to kill these animals instantly. It is a very difficult task to catch moles unharmed. For this reason most of the traps are designed to kill them. A person usually sets up the traps by installing them underground in the burrows, with an indicator being the only part left above.

There two major types of traps which are both fatal. These traps are the scissor and the barrel trap. Barrel traps are installed by putting a half- or full-cylinder metal into the barrow. Once the animal reaches the area where the snare is set, a catching loop is triggered which then snaps quickly. The catching loop then snaps around the animal and it gets killed at once.

The second type is called the scissor trap and this one too gets inserted inside the tunnel. This device has a trigger ring that hangs from its center. When the mole moves the trigger ring with its nose, it causes the device to snap and catch it. The snapping parts are made in the form of toothed jaws. Scissor traps are meant to be used once.

Having the ability to find active tunnels is among the secrets of succeeding to catch moles. One can mostly identify active tunnels by presence of soil deposits that are fresh at the entrance of the tunnel. Moles make many tunnels. Sometimes they use one or only a few of the tunnels. With this, most of the tunnels can be inactive for an extended period.

It may take a few days to catch a mole even after locating an active barrow and setting up a trap. Thus, it is important for one to be patient. Ensuring that a person does not tamper with the tunnel is very crucial. Once a mole notices the barrow has been interfered with, it may never return to it for a long period.

Finally, moles can be dangerous to handle without proper protective gear. Putting on sufficient protective gear on the hands is essential. This prevents any physical contact between the skin and the animal. Moles are famous for harboring parasites that may cause serious health conditions.
