Why Trailer Tank Washouts Are Important

By Steven Sanders

Trucks meant to deliver loads of liquid cargo are referred to as trailer tanks. Multiple variations of trailer tanks exist since they are used to contain a wide assortment of liquefied foods. Trailer tank washouts must be carried out from time to time to ensure that a vehicle is well rinsed and prepared to deliver the next cargo loaded into it.

They tend to be on the larger size since they are built to transport massive loads of goods. The tanks may be insulated or non insulated and pressurized or non pressurized. Some tanks even have internal divisions to allow the option of transporting more than one type of cargo.

Their massive size plus the complicated center of gravity can make them harder to drive or maneuver along roads and highways. Loads of around 5500 to 11600 gallons of cargo are carried by these trucks. Vehicles in Australia, known as quad tankers, can measure around four trailers long.

Their primary distinguishable factor is the massive cylindrical tank lying across the vehicle. Some companies pack their compartments with special features intended to store the specific of product being delivered. To guarantee the stability of the truck, trailer tanks contain more than one compartments and baffles.

Other than transporting gasoline to filling stations, other types of liquid goods are also transported by these trucks. These can range from industrial chemicals, molasses, milk, wine, water, liquid sugar, juices, and diesel. These tanks can be made of different materials from aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, or fiberglass reinforced plastic depending on the products being carried.

Tanks can fit up to six compartments inside, allowing companies to deliver multiple goods all at once. Tank trucks may be used to deliver various grades of gasoline to a service station in one trip. The delivery of light cargo to local communities may be carried out by smaller tank trucks.

Delivering LPG to customer households or emptying septic tanks to deliver the fecal sludge to treatment sites include some of the tasks done by the smaller tank truck. Around 3000 gallons of liquefied foods may be contained inside these smaller trucks. Fueling aircraft inside airports also include the list of roles that they play.

Because these vehicles are used to deliver all sorts of goods, it is important to have them cleaned regularly. Chemical tankers which may have carried hazardous chemicals are particularly more difficult and more costly to get cleaned. Non hazardous cargo only takes about an hour and a half to wash, rinse, and dry. This regular cleaning can cost upwards of two hundred dollars.

The use of solvents or alcohols is the cheapest and quickest option. Caustic washes can linger anywhere near the middle price range. Tankers used to deliver industrial chemicals or the nasty septic sludge pose the biggest challenge in getting rinsed. They usually require tough solvents to thoroughly wash the tank and completely remove the funky smell. Because they are more complicated to handle, these can be the most expensive to get cleaned. However, regular washouts do extend the lifespan of tanks and protect the drivers and consumers of goods from whatever hazards that were left by the previous cargo.
